NDLEA stops drug concealed in carpets

The National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) has stopped an attempt of smuggling 24.5kg of heroin concealed in carpets into the country.

Ofoyeju Mitchell, Public Affairs Head at NDLEA, stated that the cargo arrived from an Emirates flight from Karachi airport to Murtala  Mohammed International Airport (MMIA), Lagos,  and the unclaimed consignment, described in the airway bill as Pakistani hand-knotted new woollen carpets, came in from Lahore, Pakistan unaccompanied.
This is the first discovery of an attempt to conceal smuggled drugs in carpets in the country and the drug is worth N294 million,

The cargo had been abandoned by the importers and that the search was conducted "when nobody came to claim it".
"In all, there were twelve pieces of carpets, but only six contained heroin. The heroin was prepared into tiny bits inside plastic hollow treads and weaved in a way that makes it difficult to detect unless it is un-fastened,” he added.
The information on the airway bill was found to be incorrect by investigators and the NDLEA Chairman, Ahmadu Giade, who described the seizure as a difficult task has promised to unveil the importers.
